Friday Fight 269: Position Determines Perception: Can You Hear the Call?

Every Friday morning, during my quiet time with the Lord, He faithfully places something on my heart that speaks to the subtle, internal battles many of us face. This is Friday Fight 269.

How many times have we experienced a situation where what we thought we saw or heard was not at all what actually happened? We may only catch a small part of a situation and rely on our limited perception to form our opinions. Our position often determines our perception. Let's look at what that means.

Position Determines Perception: Can You Hear the Call?

Think of a time when your family gathered at a busy restaurant and you had your name placed on the waiting list. You waited where you could easily hear your name being called so you would not miss your opportunity to eat. However, some restaurants are so crowded and chaotic that waiting outside sometimes seems like a better option, while hoping you can still hear the hostess. Amid the noise, the crowds, trips to the restroom, conversations with family, phone calls, and other distractions, we suddenly realize we never heard our name called. We were too preoccupied with our surroundings to clearly hear our name being called.

Now to connect this to our spiritual walk, Jesus described this very principle when He said: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (NLT). If the enemy desired to scatter God’s sheep, he would not always begin with obvious temptation. More often he creeps in slowly, creates competing desires, pressing needs, and endless distractions. Little by little, believers drift away from hearing the Shepherd’s voice clearly. Before long, they are no longer in position to recognize His invitation and prompt to come and be fed.

If the enemy leads us astray with needs and wants that are not truly from God, and we continually follow our own hearts, how can we expect to hear the Holy Spirit when He calls? What if we become so far removed that we no longer recognize His voice when He calls?

God continuously prepares a rich spiritual meal for those who accept His invitation. Whether through prayer, worship, His Word, or fellowship with other believers, He faithfully provides nourishment for our souls. Yet, we must remain in position to receive it.

Darkness is always attempting to draw us away from the place where we hear God speak the clearest. Church, prayer, worship, obedience, and fellowship keep us in a good position to hear His voice. This means living in a posture of readiness before God. It is never that God is refusing to speak; we are simply out of position to hear. The problem is not God’s silence, but that other voices and competing commitments have drawn us away from the place where we are most attentive to Him.

Where are you most attentive to God? It is not merely a physical location, but a posture of the heart that is free from unnecessary distractions and misplaced priorities. Where we position ourselves determines what we can hear from God. This week, take time to prayerfully consider where you have positioned yourself. Have the demands of life, competing desires, or constant distractions moved you away from the place where you hear Him most clearly?

The Shepherd never stops calling His sheep. The question is not whether He is speaking—but whether we have remained in position to hear.
