Friday Fight 12 - The Curse of Comparing

Every Friday, when I wake and pray, God places something on my heart to help me fight darkness beginning in the mind. Today is FF12.

The Curse of Comparing:

How many times do we look at something or someone and compare it to our lives? We are inundated with social media or commercials about possessions we need or places in our lives we should be, but where does that lead us?

Comparing ourselves to others is another way Satan works in our minds. It could be our physical features, possessions, family dynamics, whatever; comparing ourselves to others is like a disease; spreading to other areas of our lives. Suppose we compare ourselves to someone who earns a higher income; inadequacy takes root, and we feel sorry for ourselves. The father of lies will repeatedly make us think that where we are in life is where we will always be. Darkness always lies about the love of God, telling us our sins somehow caused us to be cheated. This can lead to comparing hurtful experiences, past relationships, or even issues with our health. Eventually, we spiral to unhealthy spiritual and emotional places. Those slight feelings of inadequacy fester, and we have postured ourselves for the perfect mindset of depression. These repeated lies can slowly lead to the birth of pride. Darkness will insist we “deserve” what others have, repeatedly trying to focus our attention on these deprivations and unhealthy means of attaining them. Finally, it breaks us down, and our joy is stolen!
When we compare ourselves to others, we agree with the plans of the enemy for our lives. Comparison is the thief of joy and the stretcher of truth. So, what can we do? Look at the time spent with God and increase it. Compare the beauty of a sunset each day. Compare time surrendered to God by serving others and see where it can grow. Concentrate on the growth of your tithing or savings accounts from last year to this year. Focus on God! Pray and read the Word. Walking with a grateful heart and remaining humble will lead to the fullness of life that God intended.
