Friday Fight 276: Source or Resource?
Every Friday morning, during my quiet time with the Lord, He faithfully places something on my heart that speaks to the subtle, internal battles many of us face. This is Friday Fight 276.
How often do we look at what God has provided and truly stand in awe of the fullness of our lives?
It's easy to say “”God is my Source” when the bills are paid, opportunities are abundant, relationships feel healthy, and we feel secure.
But what happens when the very things God has given us become harder to surrender than our desire to obey Him? Our comfort, need for control, or timeline can quietly challenge our willingness to trust Him.
Source or Resource?
Sometimes the resource itself isn't the problem. The problem is when protecting the resource becomes more important than obeying the Source. God's blessings are meant to enrich our lives, not replace our dependence on Him. When we start looking to what He provides for our security, identity, or peace, we can lose sight of the One who provides it.
Recognizing the Source
We all walk through hard seasons, but we also have much to be thankful for. God blesses us with opportunities, homes, relationships, families, churches, and more. Yet sometimes our lives become so full that we lose sight of Him.
When someone asks me how to reconnect with God, I often encourage simple reflection. Think of it as a spiritual check-in—not a pass or fail, but an honest look at where you’re growing, struggling, and where God is inviting you closer.
As we reflect, we start to see whether we truly trust God as our Source or whether we’ve become overly attached to the resources, routines, and relationships He has provided.
Psalm 62:8 says, “O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.” This reminds us we can bring Him our fears, desires, and struggles instead of expecting people or circumstances to give us the security only He can provide.
When a Resource Becomes Our Source
We can look to people for validation, security, identity, or peace. We may become so dependent on someone's approval that their acceptance starts to matter more than God's truth, compromising our convictions to preserve a relationship.
This struggle can also work the other way. We can position ourselves as someone else's source by believing we must fix them, carry them, or constantly prove our love. What begins as a desire to help can become a need to control. We forget that only God can bring about true spiritual growth.
When we stay connected to our Source, our Creator, everything changes. We can love without controlling, guide without dominating, and correct without disconnecting. We can support others without carrying the burden of being their answer.
When God is our Source, we can receive our relationships and resources as gifts rather than as our foundation. We are free to appreciate what He provides while remaining surrendered to the One who provides it.
Reflection and Prayer
Take some time to reflect and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you may have mistaken a resource for your Source. Are you looking to someone or something to provide what only God can? Are you holding on so tightly that obedience has become difficult?
Invite the Holy Spirit to show you where you need to release control, realign your priorities, and reconnect with God!
